Biography
Early life and career
Wally Wood was born on June 17, 1927, and began to read the comics and young age. Was strongly influenced by the styles of the art of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, Milton Caniff Terry and the Pirates, Prince Valiant Hal Foster, Will Eisner, spirit, and in particular Wash Tubbs Roy Crane. Recalling his childhood, Wood said his sleep at the age of six years, the search for a magic pen could draw anything, predicts its future as an artist.

Wood's mother was its first editor, in a sense, picking up his first drawings and joins her sewing machine in the books. These early works, especially undated still exist today because of their actions and gives an overview of its evolution as a young artist.
Wood graduated from high school in 1944, signed with the States United States Merchant Navy at the end of World War II and enlisted in the paratroopers of the U.S. Army Airborne 11 in 1946. He went from training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Occupied Japan, where he was assigned to the island of Hokkaido. Arriving in New York with his brother Glenn and his mother after her release in July 1948, Wood found job as a busboy Bickford. During her free time she wore thick portfolio of all drawings in downtown Manhattan to visit all the editors I could find. He briefly attended the Art School of Hogarth (later changed to designers and illustrators from the school) but withdrew after one semester.
In October, after being rejected by all the companies visited, Wood met with colleagues artist John Severin in the waiting room of a small publishing house. After the two shared their experiences of trying to find work, Severin asked the forest to visit his study, Charles William Harvey Studio, where he met Charlie Wood Stern, Harvey Kurtzman (who worked for Timely / Marvel) and Old Testament. Wood in this study learned that Will Eisner was looking for an artist of substance Spirit. Eisner visited immediately and was hired on the spot.
Over the next year, Wood also became assistant to George Wunder, who took over the Milton Caniff Terry and the band of pirates. Wood spoke his "first work on myself" as head of Ob-tackle, a continuing series of tapes for a newsletter Political 1949. Entered the field of comics by letters, as recalled in 1981. "The first professional job was comic romance lyrics Fox in 1948 that lasted about a year I also started to make money and some major ink has been the subject of romance in late … pages, which was 5 cents per page … Twice a week I would like ten pages of ink in a day. "
Wood artists representing the earth helped Renaldo Epworth His early comic strip, does not know if that connection led to the wooden letters or his debut comic-art, the story of ten pages Western Fox Women Outlaws # 4 (cover-dated January 1949, the sale in late 1948) the "tip of women" [sic] in the comics. Wood art by famous comic book did not appear until No. My Confession Fox 7 (August 1949), when he began working almost continuously in the company my similar experience, My Secret Life, Love and My My true story of love confession stories convincing. His first signed work is believed to be in My Confession No. 8 (October 1949) with the name "Woody" half hidden in a theater marquee. The pen and ink two stories in this issue: "I wanted" (nine pages) and "My bad reputation" (ten pages).
Wood began EC-co-ink and brush with the story of Harry Harrison "too busy for love" (Modern Love # 5), and completely the history of pencil lead, "I Playtime was a cowboy, in the chair Romances No. 11 (April 1950), signed by Harrison.

Working from a studio in Manhattan on West 64th Street and Columbus Avenue, Wood began to attract attention in 1950 with his works of science fiction very detailed and imaginative, and the EC Comics Avon, some in collaboration with Joe Orlando. During this period, noted in a wide variety of themes and genres, including adventure, romance (it does not really care for) war stories and horror of message (SuspenStories shock EC) and, finally, the satirical humor of writer / editor Harvey Kurtzman at Mad as a satire of the publishing of proof Superman DC filed against the publisher of Captain Marvel from Fawcett called "Superduperman!" Captain Marbles fighting.
Wood helped convince the EC publisher William Gaines to start a line of comic science fiction, Weird Science Fantasy and Weird (later united under the same title Weird Science Fantasy). Pen and ink timber tens of EC science fiction stories, many classics considered. Wood also had frequent entries in the stories of two fists and Tales from the Crypt, and later titles, Valor, Aces High and piracy.
Working on scripts and a pencil breakdowns of Jules Feiffer, 25 years old, Wood has attracted two months of the classic Will Eisner, the Sunday newspaper supplement The Spirit of 1952 comic story arc on "The Spirit in space." Eisner, Wood recalled, paid "around $ 30 per week for letters and the funds of the Spirit. Sometimes it pays $ 40 when I did the drawings, too. "
Books illustrated by Wood
Between 1957 and 1967 produced two covers and interiors of more than 60 issues of Galaxy Science Fiction Digest Science Fiction, illustrating the authors as Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick Jack Finney CM Kornbluth, Frederik Pohl, Robert Silverberg, Robert Sheckley, Clifford D. Simak, and Jack Vance. Six painted covers for Galaxy Science Fiction novels between 1952 and 1958. His drawings gag appeared in men's magazines Dude, Gent and Nugget. It signed the first eight months of 1958-1961 syndicated comic Masters sky Space Force, designed by Jack Kirby. Wood expanded in book illustrations, including cover photo edits (but does not cover editions) titles in 1959 Aladdin Books reprints Bobbs Merrill in 1947 "Childhood of Famous Americans" series.
The Silver Age Bronze Age /
Wood also has art and stories of companies comic, Marvel's big and small (and its 1950 iteration, Atlas Comics), DC (including Challengers Mystery House and the unknown Kirby) and Warren (Creepy and mysterious) for small companies like Avon (Strange Worlds), Charlton (War and the attack, Jungle Jim), Fox (Martin Kane, Private Eye), Gold Key (war patrol Total in March, Fantastic Voyage), Harvey (Unearthly Spectacular), King Comics (Jungle Jim), Atlas / Litoral (the Destroyer), the young BD (Captain of Sciences) and the toy maker Wham-O (Wham-O Giant Comics). In 1965, Wood, Len Brown, and maybe Larry Ivie THUNDER Comic created by travel agents. He wrote and drew the strip syndicated comic Christmas 1967 Christmas Caper Bucky. In 1970 he was a ghost artist for an episode of Prince Valiant.
Daredevil # 7 (April 1964): The best-known work wood for Marvel, Daredevil its first modern red suit
For most of Marvel during the Silver Age of comics, woodworking as a draftsman inking Daredevil # 5-8 and ink (Bob Powell) # 11/09 issues established as distinctive red suit (at 7, cover see left). When Daredevil guest star in Fantastic Four # 39-40, Wood inked this character, more pencils by Jack Kirby on the cover and inside. Wood also drew and signed the first four rounds 10 pages of the company "Dr. Doom" in striking feature tales # 1-4 (August 1970-February 1971) and wrote and drew the horror anthology tales of suspense / Tower of Shadows # 8.5 (May-November 1970) and others sporadically.
In one of his last mission, Wood returned to a character that helped define, inking the cover of Frank Miller's Daredevil # 164 (May 1980).
In the groups affected by copyright law and intellectual property, Wood is known as the artist of the Disneyland Memorial Orgy poster unsigned satirist, who first published in The Realist, Paul Krassner. It shows a series of characters Disney's copyright in various undesirable activities (and sexual acts and drug use), with huge dollar signs Cinderella Castle radiation. Yes wood same, as late as 1981, when the question of who did the drawing, only said: "I'd rather not say anything about it! He has been drawing the most pirated history! Everyone make copies of it. I understand that some people arrested for selling it. I always thought that Disney was very sexy things … White Nieves, so Disney took no legal action against one or Krassner The realistic, but do not pursue an editor of "Black Light" version of the poster, who used the image without the permission of Krassner. During the decade of 1960, Wood made many business cards and Topps products gum humor, including famous concept roughs Topps March 1962 Attacks cards before the final art of Norman Saunders and Bob Powell. Discovery (Thomas Roy), Jack Kirby had returned to Washington DC in 1970, Wood said the editor Joe Orlando in an attempt to get new work assignment Kirby ink, but that role is already filled Vince Colletta. Wood continued to produce regular work for Marvel in the late 1970 to early, especially as ink, and then worked in a handful of DC Comics between 1975 and 1977, production in several special cases Plop!, pencils and inks for all matters in which the star BD contributed wooden building Girl Power, giving her huge tits and an opening of his suit in the chest that exposes most of her breasts, barely covering her nipples. Also inked wood (over Steve Ditko) in mini-series of four broadcasts Stalker Paul Levitz. Active in 1970 Academy of Comic Book Art, Wood also contributed to several editions of the annual ACBA Sketchbook. His last credit was known inking Wonder Woman # 269 cover July, 1980.
For several decades, many artists have worked in the woodshop. Partners and attendees included Dan Adkins, Richard Bassford, Tony Coleman, Nick Cuti, Leo and Diane Dillon, Larry Hama, Russ Jones, Wayne Howard, Paul Kirchner, Joe Orlando, Bill Pearson, Al Sirois, Ralph Reese, Bhob Stewart, Tatjana Wood and Mike Zeck.
Wood as editor
In 1966, Wood launched the independent witzend magazine, an alternative comic leader, a decade before Mike Friedrich Star Meet or Flo Steinberg Big Apple Comix (where the wood drew the cover and contributed a story.) Wood has offered colleagues the opportunity to contribute illustrations and graphic stories diverted from normal conventions of the comic industry. After the fourth question, witzend turned to Bill Pearson, who continued as editor and publisher in 1970 and 1980.

Wood also collected his first feature, Sally Forth, published in News of the U.S. military newspapers Overseas Military and 1968-1974 week in a series four large (10 "x12") magazines. Pearson, 1993-95, format the tapes in a comic series published by Eros Comix, an imprint of Fantagraphics Books, in 1998 picked up the complete series in a volume of 160 pages. [Citation needed]
In 1969, Wood has created another seminal independent comics, Heroes, the Cannon Inc., by "Sally Forth." Military readers [citation needed] Artists Steve Ditko and writer Ralph Reese and Ron Whyte is credited author and artist of the wood on three elements: "Canyon," "The Misfits" and "Dragonella." A second format magazine issue was published in 1976 by Wood and crew CPL Publications. Larry Hama, an assistant Wood said: "Sally Forth I am writing about three stories and some of Cannon. I wrote the main story on the Sally Forth Edition the first book, which is really dedicated to me, especially since I paid money for the release of Woody.
In 1980 and 1981, Wood has published two issues of a book comic full porn Gang Bang. Sally Forth had two stories sexually explicit and sexually explicit version of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, titled as white and Dorks Six, Terry and the pirates, and soldiers called Perry, Prince Valiant, Prince called violent, Superman and Wonder meeting Blunder Woman Stuporman entitled Women and Flash Gordon, Flash Gordon and Tarzan right right Starz. In recent years
For much of his adult life, Wood has suffered from chronic diseases, unexplained headache. In the 1970's, following episodes alcohol, wood has suffered from kidney failure. A stroke in 1978 caused a loss of vision in one eye. Faced with the prospect of deteriorating health and career suicide by gun fire three years later.
Wood has been married three times. His first marriage was to the artist Tatjana Wood, more later made an important work of comic book colorist.
CE editor Harvey Kurtzman, who worked closely with the wood in 1950, once remarked, "Wally was a strain on him, an intensity that contained in a boiler room. I think he was eating his heart, and work well spent. I think he made some of the best works ever made, and I think to his credit has to much intensity in his work with great sacrifice to himself. "
