Question about Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen?
This is the only Jane Austen book that I have not finished reading. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book all time and Austen up there on my list of favorite authors. The thing is I'm having trouble getting involved in the book. Page 80 and I'm struggling to be interested. For those who have read it, it is useful to me until the end? Is it better or should I switch to another book?
I'm here with you. I read all the books of Jane Austen, and I think there was more interest in issues to keep in Northanger Abbey (and I read it twice to different categories). I think he deserves to be read, but there is a character who speaks little about anything important pages – but that Austen wrote this way of making fun of his novels. I would definitely recommend finish, especially if you've read other Austen. It helps you realize that Austen mocks the gothic novels of his time, as well as the conventions of the gothic novel (Helpless heroines in peril, the dark, stately homes and castles mysterious abductions, ancient ruins, old grumpy threatening notes and hidden passages, storms and bumps in the night). It is essentially a parody of the genre with Catherine, who constantly imagines as a heroine in one of those strange sensation novels and Gothic. It is a novel fun once you realize all the places Austen little sarcastic tones through it and laugh at the absurd situations and how one's own Catalina pictures in them. Did you get to the part where she goes with her to Tilney Manor? It's better when it happens. Before that when jumped on Bath is a little slower. But I agree, Pride and Prejudice is a favorite of my time too.
