If the position the author of the book on its website and invite you to read for free, which is legal. It is legal for someone to scan the book and download on a website for others to read free. It's copyright theft. 90% of the authors can not not make a living from his writings. Only 1% of people get rich, but still does not give anyone the right to take money from their pockets.
