Ancient Celtic symbols: A mysterious blend of traditions
Many people today have learned to love ancient Celtic symbols. We see the popularity Celtic tattoos of all kinds of calendars, shirts, murals and other art objects that represent the interlacing Celtic crosses and mandalas. Many of these designs are amazing and beautiful, but what is its origin?
The ancient Celts were a mysterious people who do not maintain historical records. Its tradition is essentially an oral, handed down from generation to generation. Most of what historians know the Celts is that others, especially the Romans said about them. From the Romans and the Celts were not very friendly, if not, what makes certain reports may be less reliable. Add to this the usual problems of verifying the information over a thousand years ago, and you begin to see how you can become cloudy.
The Celts appear in history around 600 BC. Some of ancient megaliths, which are generally associated with them, such as Stonehenge was built by the pre-Celtic whose exact identity is unknown. Some of the symbols associated with Celts, these spirals and crosses were also made by pre-Celtic peoples. The cross in one way or another, is a very common symbol used by many people old, long before Christianity began using it as a symbol.
The Celts incorporated many of these more symbols in a unique and incomparable art. Perhaps the most important reason is its distinctive Celtic knotwork, which began to appear at the beginning of the Christian era. Although we can not say for sure exactly what direction had knots in the Celtic, the models certainly suggest spiritual meanings, such as infinity, interdependence and perhaps mixing dualities.
Another practice Celtic distinctive was the use of animals, known as zoomorphic images, which often combine human creatures, animals and mythical. Many of these images can be found Christian Celtic in the manuscript, the Book of Kells. In fact, many contemporary creations were inspired by medieval illustrated book.
Ancient and Medieval Celtic are not isolated, but are often in contact (and war) with other tribes, and the Roman Empire. Thus, Celtic art and culture is an amalgam of ideas and styles inspired by pre-Celtic peoples of Great Britain who left us his mysterious monuments and sculptures, environmental influences, which finally understood Christianity, and of course that Celtic are created and modified its own style.
This mix of influences do not affect the contribution made by the Celts. It is, in fact, it is common to almost all cultures. The Romans, for example, have been strongly influenced by the Greeks, who in turn were influenced by the Egyptians, etc. However, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Celts, the Like all cultures developed exclusively yours.
If some ancient Celtic symbols were originally created by earlier peoples, is just the way the world works. A symbol, for example, we often see in contemporary triskele Celtic design is a triple spiral. This is a design found on monuments old as Newgrange in Ireland, dating from around 3000 BC. We can not say exactly what this concept means for the people who originally called. Later interpretations, however, have connected in Trinidad triple spiral, while the neo-pagans say it represents the Triple Goddess.
The great thing about the symbols, that have much significance, and it's up to you to choose what is meaningful to you. Ancient Celtic symbols are particularly rich in its ability to inspire contemplation and appreciation.
