What is the best place to stay and take public transportation and walk to destinations in Portland?

My husband and I are Visiting Portland without a car and a small budget for our first anniversary / honeymoon. I want to book hotels in a region that is easy to navigate in traffic or feet. All tables to go to the zoo, museums, gardens, etc? Moreover, cheap eats? Thanks to all who answered my question! There was much Beautifully cast information and answers, sorry I could not choose a best answer to us! We are still planning our trip, but so far we located in a 3 star hotel near the convention center for $ 62 per night! I'm also looking at the attractions exceed $ 35 per person for the first 10 sites Portland and spent a week at TriMet for $ 20 each. Thanks again!

In my opinion the best solution would be something like the MAX (light rail) of the line. My advice is to get a hotel near Palais des Congres. It is at the heart of the city with easy access to both beautiful and west of the east side of Portland. As stay at the Double Tree and the Holiday Inn near the convention center. From there you can take light rail downtown for free. If you buy tickets all day you can take to the zoo and all the results of the Beaverton, if desired. It also runs east and north of Gresham at the airport but do not usually go in that direction. MAX will from the center of Pioneer Courthouse Square and the region has much to see and do. If you go downtown, you can use Tri-Met ticket for the same car from the street and up to 23 and Burnside. This area has many things to do, especially shopping and eating. The tram will also take you near the Portland Art Museum, the Center for Performing Arts, Central Library and Historical Society of Oregon in the middle of all the SW. Tri-Met The same tickets are valid on buses, too. This So you can follow the advice of others or go to almost any where in the city, if you can find a bus route. The tree twice, you can walk Lloyd Center or anywhere else nearby. There are some good restaurants and bars in the area.
