The idea of turning your mattress every few months can be a daunting task for some if not most. So when a customer sees a non-turn mattress available the immediate reaction would be a relief that it will only need turning end to end rather than the whole way over. Bed and mattress retailers are keen to advertise a cheaper more customer friendly product although what really is the other side of the story.
It is important to remember the reason why a non-turn mattress or divan bed is less expensive on a like-for-like basis than one that is “fully turnable” – The expensive fillings are only needed on one-side of the mattress. The other points of note about non-turn mattresses are that products like memory foam are only suited to being non-turn because of their construction. Other benefits include the ability to use mini-springs, mattress toppers with latex and visco & a firmer base spring when over two levels.
The only other question left is durability. The sleep council advise on changing your bed every 8-10 years, which is usually supported by manufacturer warranty generally running along similar timescales. Surely the logic is that if a mattress can be turned it will last twice as long? There are no definitive answers to this question as manufacturers maintain their guarantees irrespective of the ability to turn a mattress. Our rationality on this subject is a simple one. Do people realistically turn their mattress inline with their care guides to get the full usability from their mattress? Our best assessment is probably not. The old adage says “You get what you pay for” generally stands across the bedding industry.

I read International Relations and Intelligence Studies at Aberystwyth University and enjoy keeping up-to-date with current affairs and reading history books. In my spare time (of which there is very little!) I enjoy swimming, playing football and rugby as well as going to the gym. The reason I write articles is to promote my business activities and explain in simple terms areas where I have gained experience.
