Nudity in the media…unfair to both sexes?
Why do you think it is that it is perfectly acceptable to show women’s front parts (that is, her breasts) in movies, tv shows, and comic books, and sometimes even her private parts, but it’s completely unacceptable for media to show men’s private parts? If they do, it’s rated X, while women’s nudity is only considered PG-13 at the most. Why is there this double standard? It seems sexist and unfair to both women and men. What do you think?
I agree with you. This sounds really, really stereotypical, especially in this forum, but it is partially an objectification–media assume audiences are more interested in looking at naked women and naked women are what they promote.
But you made a balanced statement about it being unfair to both sexes. Mass media presents breasts and vulvas and tells us to admire or want this (or whatever) while penises are somehow something dirty. I’ve known several people to talk about how “ugly” male bodies are, and sometimes they cite how “hairy” they are. Well, males are hairier than females, but the only reason women’s bodies are hairless is because they’re shaved! That’s another point, actually. Women’s bodies aren’t presented as they naturally are, but in this idealized, highly stylized form that we’re taught to ingest as normal or better. Biologically speaking, there’s no reason why hair on a woman’s legs should look disgusting anymore than hair on her head.
I think in general sexual roles are presented in a very unhealthy fashion.

The Dukes of Hazzard (Unrated Widescreen Edition) $1.99 The teaming of Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) and Seann William Scott (Dude, Where’s My Car?) as well as the presence of the ’70s-flavored car chases that were a specialty of the TV series guarantees that The Dukes of Hazzard will be even more lowbrow than the CBS TV series (1979-85) that inspired it. However, this brain-damaging comedy is more “rehash” than “remake,” as good ol’ Georgiaboy… |
