Which of the Lost Books of the Bible would you like to see included in today’s Bible if it were permitted?
There are 15 Pseudepigraphal Book and 15 Deuterocanonical (Apocryphal) Books. If you now of any, which ones come close to possibly being a little truthful? I think The Books of Adam & Eve should be included. What if God asked you on Judgment Day why you didn’t read the Lost Books and study them? What would be your response?
The “deuterocanonicals” *are* considered to be a part of the bible by a large majority of Christians (Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox sects and Anglican (Episcopalian) Communion), so they are not an issue.
The remaining apocrypha books, 1 & 2 Esdras, have little new to add (except for the use of the phrase “I would have gathered you like a hen gathers her chicks”, which is also used by Jesus and *may* be an example of a New Testament quote from apocrypha).
As far as the books of the apocrypha go, I would say that they are entirely truthful until shown to be otherwise. I have *read*, from a source that I consider reliable, that there is an historical error in 2 Maccabees, but it was not exposed then and I have not discovered it myself. 1 & 2 Esdras appear to be mere summaries of Ezra / Nehemiah.
There are actually *dozens* of pseudepigraphal books. The HarperCollins Bible Dictionary mentions 65, and acknowledges that others may exist. Of these, the one I would be most *inclined* to accept is the book of Jubilees, primarily because of three reasons
1) It has been found in the original Hebrew (indeed, from the number of copies among the Dead Sea Scrolls, it appears that it was extremely popular among the Jewish religious class at that time)
2) I have read that it is a sort of summary of Genesis, and so is scripturally based
3) I have not yet read it, and so am aware of no inaccuracies
1 Enoch has similar credentials except one: I *have* read it, and it is full of obvious inaccuracies. Those inaccuracies, having to do with the annual cycle, may not have been obvious to Jews of the first century B.C.E., as this also appears to have been extremely popular amongst the Jews of that time.
If God asked why I didn’t study them (and why He would do such a thing, I have no idea, as many Christians throughout history have not had access to *any* scripture or even literacy), I would tell him that it did not appear to be authentic. When a book contradicts either our *certain* knowledge of the world (not theory) or canonical scripture, we can be fairly certain that it is not authentic.
