Difference between modeling clay and polymer clay?
I want to make sculptures of action figures like those you see in comic book stores, but i’m wondering which one is better to use…polymer or modeling clay? i don’t know the difference of those two, and i dont want something that would instantly become powdery or chalky. Any info is would be greatly appreciated…
thanks
Hi, you need to bake polymer clay in order to cure it. It will not dry hard on it’s own. Modeling clay is often used in claymation so that they can reposition the character in order to film it.
Polymer clay bakes to a hard finish. You need to be aware of the different types of polymer clay. Some are very brittle after baking, such as SculpeyIII. Premo, another Sculpey product, is extremely durable after baking.
If you are creating figures, you can always use aluminum foil inside your creation in order to cut down on the amount of clay that you will require.
You bake polymer clay in an ordinary oven for 30 min. per 1/4″ thickness. As long as your oven is accurate, you can’t over bake it. I have re-baked items after adding pieces to them.
There are lots of projects with instructions at:
