Question about public domain books from 1900.?
Specifically about the “Oz” book series from L Frank Baum. Which are partially in the public domain, the first few books are anyway. But is this referring to the printing, the story or the actual book? Say you wanted to use images, or tin types from the books from 1900, original scans, obviously. Is this legally ok, or does public domain just refer to the actual story, and not the actual printing or the books in question?
And use for what, that may be helpful. They would be incorporated into various images and textures I will be using to create a video game type environment based on a few of the first books. Not the movies, in fact most of the story lines I am choosing, have never been used in a movie at all. I wanted to use the various images of the tim woodman, lion and scarecrow from the original 1900 printings.
The copy that I read a couple of years ago was a reprint of the 1900 edition with the original art, and it was only a few (10 years?) old. I’m sure that those types and images are still protected.
