The Panama Canal – History of the United States was at its best
The construction of the Panama Canal, has initiated a new era in U.S. history Together. America had arrived as a world power and the channel was an important event, and part of this power.
The history of the building Panama Canal should be required reading in schools. It is a beautiful story of planning, ingenuity, hard work and dedication.
Up I myself know more about the Panama canal, I had no idea of what a great achievement it was and still is. In my modern era, namely the 21 century, when I look at small mountains in a matter of weeks, I did not know that even in our time, the construction of this canal, still be a monumental task.
And not even the whole story. The conquest of malaria and yellow fever, in turn, is an unparalleled success, and is a story in itself.
The numbers are staggering. When excavating what is known as the Culebra (Culebra by Mountain), 96 million cubic yards of soil was removed, and over 19 million pounds of dynamite was used in court alone.
If a canal across the Isthmus of Panama was considered by many, was the French who actually planned and began to dig a channel in 1882.
Ferdinand de Lesseps, credited with building the Suez Canal in Egypt, was the driving force behind the effort to build a canal in Panama. He felt that the canal could be built and operated by private funding, rather than by the French government.
Although it is not an engineer, insisted that the sea level canal was built, like Suez, instead of a lock canal. This proved to be a serious error, and after several years of excavations in 1885, changes were made in the design, adding a lock to the channel.
In Suez, the canal was built at sea level because the land is at the level the sea in Panama, this meant creating a small valley cut through Culebra Mountain. The task of creating the "Gaillard Cut", as it was called turned out to be underestimated, and, together with the lack of financial support, and more than 20,000 deaths attributed to disease (yellow fever and malaria), have led to the failure of French society and the efforts of France in 1889.
A new French company was established in 1894 in a vain attempt to complete the canal.
At the same time, United States had considered building a canal. In 1899, a committee ultimately recommended the construction of a lock canal in Nicaragua instead of Panama. President McKinley was ready to sign a bill to begin construction of the canal, however, was assassinated in 1901 before he could sign the bill.
His predecessor, Theodore Roosevelt was also a supporter of the construction of a canal, and was particularly interested in this project after advertising an incident during the Spanish Civil War in which a U.S. warship, Ore., had to make a two-month trip through South America San Francisco, to participate in the war (which was almost over). A channel is necessary if the United States was to assert his power, and engage the global community.
It seems that the canal will be built in Nicaragua. He had the support of politicians and ordinary citizens the same. It seems that the die was cast, until the French company offered new to sell its stake in Panama for $ 40 million instead of its original price of $ 100 million.
The fall in prices has allowed construction of a canal in Panama more convenient than in Nicaragua. He took great effort to change the minds of Americans, and support of the Panama Canal but ultimately in 1902, funding was authorized to construct the Panama Canal.
The American era of canal construction has not begun before 1904. Meanwhile, the United States attempted to negotiate an agreement with Colombia to build a canal in the province of Panama. But trading with instability and constantly changing, the Colombian government has been impossible. In 1903, Panama declared its independence is Colombia, with the support of U.S. military power. In 1904, Congress ratified a treaty with Panama's new government has opened the door construction of the Panama Canal. Panama's history has always been linked to the era of American history.
The Panama Canal Construction began in 1904 and officially ended in August 1914. The fact that the station has endured for more than 92 years is a testament to the skill of its builders, only to see the photos of the lock, then and now, to know they are supposed to last.
Engineering and construction channel, even by modern standards, is a wonder without equal. It is likely that deserves a permanent place as one of the Seven Wonders of the modern world, and a rightful place in the history of the American era.
There are many good books tell the whole story in the history of Panama and the canal. If the story became a movie would be an exciting and inspiring story of human courage ingenuity, and triumph.
