The Success of Goodwill Industries in Washington
Goodwill Industries of Greater Washington DC was created in 1935 by social worker Elizabeth Murray along with six other community leaders. It took five years to establish, but the dream of helping people via a local Goodwill Industries organization was finally a reality in the nation’s capital. Legally, the charity goes by the name of the Davis Memorial Goodwill Industries. This is because of a $100,000 donation made by Anne Hubbard Davis in 1939.
Today, they are most celebrated for the many events they organize, such as an annual book sale, which has been endorsed by celebrities including Barbara Bush, and for the Annual Embassy Tours. They’re also becoming known for their Fashion of Goodwill Campaign, which insists “It’s not your grandmother’s closet” at Goodwill of Greater Washington.
Speaking of clothes and fashion, it’s items like clothes, couches and cars being donated that allow organizations like Goodwill Industries to thrive all over the nation, helping literally thousands of people each and every year. Whether you donate a box of old sweaters (which might mean the world for someone who buys them) or an old Pontiac car in the garage (which also might mean the ability to get to and from work for someone) – your donation makes a difference.
Goodwill of Greater Washington has been working with the community for decades, and with vehicle donation providing new sources of revenue, they will be able to continue helping people in the country’s capital for many more years. GGW (as it is known by the locals), currently operates a chain of retail stores and employs over seven hundred people, over five hundred of which could be classed as disabled.
If you’ve ever thought about whether you should donate your car to Goodwill Industries or not, don’t think about it anymore. You should. Charity Dispatch can help you with the donation process and can send your car donation to any Goodwill Industries organization across the country.
