I bought a book used – says “Advance Uncorrected Proofs” – question about differences?
I bought a book used online as a gift. The book is supposed to have a bunch of photos in the middle, but it doesn’t, and it says “Advance Uncorrected Proofs – Not For Sale” on the front. From what I know, it means it’s for reviewers to read before the actual book comes out. Are they normally very different? Will there be things like misspellings or grammar mistakes, or is it generally just about the same thing? There’s no time to get another copy, and it shouldn’t be a big deal. Are these copies rare or worth any extra money on places like eBay? It’s a book about a band, so would collectors or fans be into this sort of things? Basically I’m just wondering if this is a “Yeah, it’s the rare advance edition, too!” or a “Sorry, it’s the uncorrected lesser version” type of thing.
“Uncorrected Lesser Version,” not likely to have extra value at any time once the actual book is released.
If you got ahold of a major author’s book before the release date of the actual book, then you would have some takers, I’m sure, and could auction it off online (I won’t go into the ethics of that).
Once the final version of the book is available for sale to the public, the advance reader’s copy has no extra value. It is likely to have misspellings, and it’s possible that some things could be changed in the final version, although I myself haven’t ever noticed a change in the actual story of the ones I’ve read.
Since you bought the book as a gift, I think you should ask for your money back. Give the person a gift certificate or a printout indicating that the book has been ordered (cross off the price from the website’s page, or you could make up a certificate yourself in Word).
You may want to explain what happened so the person you’re giving it to knows the tardiness of the gift is not your fault. Just say you wanted them to have a better version with the photos in it. Unless you truly don’t think they’ll care. Personally, I probably would. You can’t exchange advance reading copies at a bookstore either, since they aren’t sold at retail stores.
