If I get an ebook off ebay will I have problems with rights to content?
I’m in Canada, and when one of my friends bought an ebook she wasn’t able to download stuff that wasn’t from Canada (which they didn’t tell her until she bought it). Someone told me on a previous answer that it’s the store itself that limits content that they don’t have rights to, how does this impact ebooks on ebay?
My bad, I mean an ereader not an ebook.
I don’t think it’s the file types, she just can’t buy files from anywhere but canada. For example, she can’t buy that Twilight book. At all. And it’s fairly popular, so that’s really odd.
You don’t indicate the model, and it would help immensely if you told us what is it. If it is one of the types that can connect wirelessly to a specific ebook store, like the Kindle or the nook, then she will have issues connecting to the proprietary ebookstore if that ebookstore doesn’t allow for access out of its country of origin (usually the United States). However, depending on the model, she should still be able to download ebooks online in compatible formats and with non-proprietary DRM and upload them to her ebook reader, as long as the publisher doesn’t impose geographical restrictions on the book she wants. If she wanted wireless connection and it’s not working out, she should return that item, and then research for an appropriate one that actually allows for her to connect and buy her ebooks within her country.
If she returns it, a good one to try is Kobo. I know for a fact it works beautifully in Canada, as one of my friends uses it and is very happy with it.
