For older books, published before 1923, start with:
http://www.gutenberg.org (they have over 27,000 e-books, also in various languages)
http://manybooks.net
http://www.munseys.com
http://www.webliterature.net
http://www.feedbooks.com
Then do a search for “free e-books” and you will find many more links.
Newer books are still under copyright protection, so you will have a much harder time finding free e-book versions.
