American Dream – Great Gatsby?
Ive been given this question, “What evidence is there in chapters 1, 2 and 3 that Fitzgerald was disillusioned with the American Dream? Find quotations to support this point of view?” But I dont understand how you can be disillusioned with it..does it mean find quotes saying that Fitzgerald believes the American Dream is over, or not real?

I read this book quite a while ago so it’s hard for me to remember individual chapters. However, if you look for descriptions of “the white dust” that clings to almost every character. Also read again the section about the wasteland, where an advertisement for a doctor overlooks all like a god and you should find some good quotes to back up Fitzgerald’s disillusionment. Take note of the “Town Tattler” replacing the Bible on coffee tables, the decadence of the party and Gatsby’s eventual downfall due to the epitome of the American Dream – the motor car.
Basically the point is that modern consumerist society is destroying America, which is quite prescient considering the book was written only four years before the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression.
I hope this helps.
“Ain’t We Got Fun?” (Van & Schenck, 1921)
