EBooks IPad = IBad?

Lets cut to the quick. The answer to the little mathematical conundrum above is unequivocally, irrevocably, undoubtedlywere not sure! While the jury is still out (because no one actually owns an iPad yet), lets look at the recent swarm of criticism thats being generated on the blogosphere about the release of Apples latest super mac daddy.

Everyone is still a couple of days away from clutching the actual thing in their eager little hands but already (apart from all the salivation,) the proverbial fur has been flying. The invectives range from criticism about the iPads low battery life, actual weight, lack of flash capabilities and. . . Wait, whaa-t? No camera? Okay, fair enough. But lets just point out real quick that none of this has stopped the sale of 50,000 of the darn tablets (as if they had been carved out of the side of Mount Sinai) in the first two hours they went on sale, online. The total was a whopping 500,000 units by the end of week two. And as of a few days ago, shipping for pre-orders had been delayed to April 12. Which only means one thing Apple had temporarily run out of iPads.

But what really concerns us here in Dieselopolis, obviously, is its potential (or lack thereof) as a legit, and maybe even game changing, eReader. Sooo, since were the latest casual and hopefully authoritative voice on eBook everythinghere we go.

The numero uno possible glitch is that the digital-holy grail-to-be doesnt come with iInk technology, which makes the reading experience so painless on the Amazon Kindle and Sony devices. Mr. Jobs, who always seems to have an answer for everything, dismisses the issue with a grand sweep of his cyber hand, stating that the high-resolution, LED-backlit screen displays every page beautifully, with crisp, sharp text that makes reading a joy, according to the Apple portal. What kind of ink tech is it actually using, then? No one knows. But if you do a B line for the site to dig further, make sure to check out their recently posted nifty little iPad promo vid, complete with creepy mother-and-son-quality-time intro, here.

The most contentious issue of all, however, is the mystery surrounding the question as to whether the iPad will be inexorably tethered to iBooks, Apples elegant eBook app and store. Although it seems unlikely, as we all know theyve been known to be fairly exclusionary with some of their past products. But, fear not. This is a brave new world where the sands under your feet shift faster than new blogs pop up. Word already has it that Amazon has developed a Kindle app for iPad. And that its beautiful, functional and, dare we say it, Zen-like. If thats the case, you can bet your iPhone that other platforms will soon follow. Mystery kindle (okay, kinda) solved.

One things for sure, according to comScore, the self-professed preferred source of digital marketing intelligence, the iPad already matches Amazon Kindle in purchase intent among Ereader consumers. In fact, nearly 40% of those surveyed indicated theyd use the device to read books. So apart from all its so flavor of the week computing and surfing features, the iPad could very well be on its way to becoming the eBook game changer we alluded to earlier, in the end.

Okay, we know. Youve read this far and are still breathlessly waiting to see if wed render a definitive, unambiguous, final final pre-verdict on this whole topic, instead of just teasing you along through tons of conjecture. So, in all our infinite wisdom, lets just say that were ready to go on record to unflinchingly state that the iPad will be eGood, after allmaybe.
