Which electronic book reader should I get?
I want one that:
- I can plug regular earphones into.
- Has text-to-speech or another way of reading the book aloud.
- Is under $200, new.
- Comes with a free case.
- Comes with a charger, or I can buy one very inexpensively.
- Gets good reviews.
Which would you recommend?
1. The better way to narrow it down would be to rule out those that don’t have a headphone jack. There aren’t many without.
2. The Kindle 2, 3 and DX are the only ones with TTS but publishers and authors often disable the feature.
3. Almost all new e-ink readers are under $200 in the 5″ and 6″ sizes. The ones that are over $200 are those with larger than 6″ screens.
4. The new Kindle 3 hasn’t even shipped yet and the only cases available for pre-order are not included. One has a built-in light and costs $60. The other is the same thing without the light for $35.
5. They all come with a USB cable that charges it from a computer or with an A/C adapter.
6. Since the lack of the TTS feature is looking like the deal-breaker, it’s pretty much narrowed down to the Kindle. The Kindle 3, the only one available as new right now, hasn’t shipped. There are no actual user reviews. Reviews of the previous generations are available at the Amazon web site. Reviews of others are available from any number of sites; SonyStyle.com, BestBuy.com, Borders.com, B&N.com, etc.
