Why keep hands copyrighted library books for free?
But do not let you download a book for free? They say they have the book in a library, and more loans that would allow you to download free. Libraries are paid by taxpayers, if they let people download would be cheaper and could save trees. Is there any online library, paid for books to be made available for download as an ordinary book would be outside the library?
It's complicated, but it has something to do with the so-called doctrine of first sale. You can read an explanation worthy of it in wikipedia. Basically, it boils down to this: The doctrine of first sale of a limited copyright that was recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court 1908 and later codified the Copyright Act 1976, 17 USC § 109. The doctrine allows the purchaser to transfer (ie sell or give away) a particular lawful copy of the copyrighted work copyright without permission once it was obtained. This means that the rights of the holder of copyright law to control the change of ownership of a particular copy end once that the copy is sold, provided that no additional copies are made. This doctrine is also called the "first sale rule" or "exhaustion rule." …….. That said, this does not apply to download a book, a downloaded copy would be "an extra copy." Many libraries are not e-books you can read online but they are not able to download directly to your computer or print the full content.
