Hook reluctant readers
Some time ago I was shopping at the book section of Costco, a cozy place for a book-lover. Travel latest thrillers, I found this exchange between a middle school girl and her mother.
Girl: "But why can not read the Da Code Vinci
Mom: "It is a book for adults, honey Here, take .."
Girl: "?. 'The Hobbit' I do not want read this, offers a kid "
Mom: "We urge you to read The Hobbit."
At that time, I felt like to step in and say, "Excuse me Madam, I am the author. Stay away from The Hobbit. Let's read what the girl he loves. "
The truth is that it is very difficult to get some children to put the nose in a book. There is no need to complicate things trying to make it read something like.
Educators, parents and all authors want to continue reading reluctant readers. However, these readers can finickier an audience of cats in a taste test of cat food. They may know what they like, they may not know what they dislike.
Believe everything you need to create a player is the perfect book. Find this story is the trick.
So how to choose books that are hooked reluctant readers? Every child is different, with very particular tastes. However, here are some key players to engage children, and some suggested titles:
HUMOR
Whether you hate or love Captain Underpants, you can not deny that his humor captures readers – especially children. Children love to laugh, and if you can put funny books in their hands, which will engulf them.
Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey
Time warp Trio by Jon Scieszka
Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by Deborah and James Howe
The Chet Gecko Mysteries by Bruce Hale
Mr. Chickee's Funny Money Christopher Paul Curtis
SYMPATHETIC CHARACTERS
Whatever kind of history falls on a main character must have a unit that claims a friend. Equally important, the story must be told in a concise, vigorous writing. Reluctant readers do not have the patience to slog through the long and complicated prose.
Brown by Paula Danziger Amber
Millicent Min, Girl Genius by Lisa Yee
Hank Zipzer series by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver
Superfudge by Judy Blume
FANTASY
Children I love books that have a compelling "what if" (if a tree house was a time machine, what to do if a child was to school of witchcraft?) and spin a story. Other worlds, magical events, strangers – all these elements can enter the imagination of the reader motivation.
Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne
Harry Potter by JK Rowling
Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
My Teacher is an Alien Bruce Coville
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
ACTION
With competition for many films, television and video games, books must go if you want to seduce. stories are very slow pace of more experienced readers, but reluctant readers need books that touch the ground today.
Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
The Redwall books by Brian Jacques
Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
THE PROMISE something will happen
Is why we all read and see what happens next in the story. A book that creates suspense from the beginning and keeps it to keep kids reading.
Animorphs by KA Applegate
Holes by Louis Sachar
Matt Christopher Sports Series Matt Christopher
Goosebumps by RL Stine
SERIES
books series of training wheels. Provide familiar characters in a familiar world that is more easy to get lost with each new title. books in the series build skills literacy and create new readers.
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
Judy Moody by Megan McDonald
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Rick Riordan
The Magic Schoolbus series by Joanna Cole
STRONG VISUALS
graphic novels, manga and comics, with their strong visual content, many readers hook reluctant – especially children. These books can serve as a springboard for more than fiction.
Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai
Bone by Jeff Smith
Groo the Wanderer by Sergio Aragones
Babymouse by Jennifer and Matthew Holm
Viewing
Some reluctant readers do not want luxury, they want the real world. If you take the time to provide books with multicultural characters can be identified, readers will react.
Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
Against Sgt Christopher Paul Curtis
Who am I without him? Sharon Flake (YA)
Some say it is good to give children certain kinds of books it is not prudent to read comics or literature of escape. Personally, I'm happy if kids read just about anything – magazines, instructions for games video, cereal boxes, or writing on the wall – as they read.
First, we show that reading can be fun. Only after this is achieved we can offer the more difficult books open mind.
If you want a country of illiterates in the future, reaching reluctant readers is now our first task. (After that, we can concentrate on playing "police book" at Costco. Just kidding.)
