Question for English (speaking) teachers in Japan?
I was using the side by side in the series (Steven J. Molinsky, Bill Bliss) for Intermediate students for many years. Based on your experience, what other series that works best for students who have completed the fourth book and are ready to move forward?
Side by Side. One of the cities that used to live in this set used. But I could never seem to go beyond level 2 (the red book). Are you sure that students know better than I (or me), but I guess if you have progressed through the levels of this series, then you should be fine now. The two levels (blue and red) in parallel I used were not very complicated books, but the reasons for the vocabulary and conversation were used without doubt more advanced than any other thing I saw at that time in college English textbooks. (About 8-10 years ago). Thus they arrived at level 4 then maybe they are ready to advance in the textbooks at least something closer to life and the real world. Maybe a magazine like Time, Newsweek and newspapers like the Daily Yomiuri and the Japan Times could be more exciting for them to study. Many of these promotional rates for school / classes and I think some kind of study material / guide to go with your articles. Know that when you teach Eikaiwa, which are often expected to use standard materials such manual. These can be very useful to teach some models and vocabulary.However, often met people who are very good at using these models and the vocabulary in the structure provided by the text, but there was a very difficult time when the text is not the focal point of the lesson. There may be limits to what you can try, or perhaps to meet expectations, but if your students can enjoy some unorthodox materials: Western comics, newspaper articles, novels, poetry, a famous painting, a piece of music (classical / rock West / Japan), television ads television western / news / etc, something etc, etc to challenge the use of English, they know all ready, which are not used. Something to talk and talk and think about what they want to say that instead of simply repeating a pattern we've seen in a textbook. I think you've probably taken as much as you can with text. Maybe they will get the most out of something different.
