Authors should use a pseudonym?
I have worked with authors who have used pen names, and always seemed to me a great obstacle when it comes to effectively marketing their books.
The reason is simple: when you try to start his book with the platform … Friends, family, co-workers, people who appreciate your writing in general … who know you by name in pen. They know. If suddenly you are using a completely new name different members of the community as the platform you are unless you tell them, not that defeat the purpose of using a pseudonym, in the first place? For example, if you want your College Alumni Newsletter mention the fact that he published a book, we do not know by his pseudonym, and his teammates do not know who you are, whatever.
Very few authors who have spoken and have decided to use pseudonyms have changed their names for good reason. I just thought it was something that the authors had to do. Sometimes I use a pseudonym, but are rare.
The use of a pseudonym makes sense if:
1. His book would be a shame for friends and family. Maybe your book is very sensitive would ridicule or embarrassment to the people in your life, as the substance or sexual abuse.
2. You are in the witness protection program. OK, it might be a little extreme, but if you have a good reason to keep his true identity secret to protect his life, family, work, etc., can be useful to consider a pseudonym.
3. His real name is not negotiable. You do not have a name with 13 consonants in a row to really enjoy it, but if your name is not pronounced by the average person in the street, you might consider a pseudonym. Otherwise, the name your parents gave you work very well.
4. To hide their sex. This little trick is mainly used by men who write romance novels. For some reason, women prefer reading novels by other women, not a boy of 50, wearing a flannel shirt and smoking cigars.
Stephen King has written four novels under a pseudonym, Richard Bachman. It was not his idea. At that time, his publisher said that readers do not buy more than one novel per year by the same author. Pearl Grey changed his name to Zane Grey, I felt that readers would not buy a novel of the West from a guy named Pearl (which is probably right.)
For most, using a pseudonym surprised me as more than a matter of vanity than anything … a bit like having a plate that says something cute. It may seem like a good idea at the time, but most People do not understand.
Marketing a book is quite difficult. Why is harder to hide his achievement of creating a book?
